At NCSC, men and women of all ages and backgrounds generously give their time, energy, and experience to help children, teens and families to learn, to grow, and to have fun. As part of SOAR 55, volunteers also provide professional expertise in various managerial projects in non-profit agencies in our area.

Volunteer Receptionist & Greeter

Hiring Manager: Claire Kashuck

As the first person a visitor will see as they enter the agency, this position will serve to create a welcoming yet secure atmosphere at NCSC. Friendly yet professional, the greeter will serve to ensure that people entering the building find their way to appointments yet are discouraged from entering child care areas.

Core Competencies & Characteristics:

  • Must be a people person and genuinely enjoy the role of making people feel welcome in the building
  • Professional work habits and dress
  • Must be flexible and able to work independently & efficiently
  • Responsibilities:

  • Greet and welcome all visitors to the building
  • Maintain a log of all visitors in the building making sure they sign in when they arrive and sign out when they leave
  • Answer questions as needed
  • Help visitors get to where they need to go
  • Support programs with miscellaneous administrative tasks as needed (ex. Copying, mailing)
  • Hours, frequency, and duration:

  • 3 hour shifts (9:30-12:30 or 1:30-4:30) a minimum of 2 days per week
  • Volunteer Librarian

    Hiring Manager: Claire Kashuck

    Role: Research is definitive regarding the importance of early literacy skills for school readiness, successful reading and over all achievement. Development of early literacy skills is woven throughout all of our programming. This role will organize and maintain the book collection for NCSC toddler and preschool programs as well as a parenting resource library. You may expand your activities relating to reading and books based on your interest and the needs of the program.

  • Develop, implement and maintain an organizational system by theme for the preschool books in the resource room
  • Opportunity to select books and read aloud to children in preschool classrooms

  • Flexible schedule, 1-2 hours per week after books are organized
  • 6 month minimum commitment requested
  • Orientation & Training Provided:

  • As needed by the supervisor
  • Accounting/Finance Intern

    Hiring Manager: Claire Kashuck

    Assist the Associate Executive Director for Business Operations and the Controller in preparing the annual operating budget/forecast. Maintain the budget model on a current basis. Calculate variances and update on a current basis. Participate in special projects such as cost/benefit studies. Various research projects analyzing cost savings related to capital needs, new vendors, and alternative operating methods.

    Accounting and or finance major/experience is necessary. Experience with MS Office, Solomon, Management Reporter, and Payroll Systems a plus.

    Minimum commitment of 12 hours per week; 3 days at 4 hours each.

    CAP Prevention Specialist

    Hiring Manager: Gail Sommer

    Teach children strategies for being safe by training as a Prevention Specialist for the Child Assault Prevention Program. You will present workshops to students in grades K, 2 & 5 in the Newton schools to teach simple strategies to reduce vulnerability to assault and violence that focus on bullying, stranger safety, and assault by known persons.

    We are planning the next volunteer training sessions, and accepting new volunteers now.

    Minimum Commitment: 6 hours per month for one school year.

    Teacher Assistants

    Hiring Manager: Claire Kashuck

    Assist classroom teachers in our Early Education and Child Care Program caring for infants through pre-schoolers by signing on as a volunteer Teacher Assistant. You'll supervise children in classroom, gym and playground activities to help assure that all children are safe and integrated into the activities.

    Time Commitment: one year with a consistent schedule depending on the activity.
