Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, and we have fun and meaningful opportunities for you to volunteer! At NCSC, men and women of all ages and backgrounds generously give their time, energy, and experience to help children, teens and families to learn, to grow, and to have fun. As part of SOAR 55, volunteers also provide professional expertise in various managerial projects in non-profit agencies in our area.

To learn more about the opportunities listed below, or to explore where your skills and passions may be put to work for the community, please contact our volunteer coordinator Claire Kashuck.

Prior to volunteering at Newton Community Service Center, we require each applicant to undergo Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) inquiries.

PCHP Home Visitor

Get involved in our early literacy program as a Home Visitor in the Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP). PCHP is an early literacy program for low-income, low-literacy families living in Newton, Needham, Waltham, and Wellesley.

You will work with children 16 months to 4 years and their parent by bringing a new book or toy (provided by program) each week to the family to model and encourage verbal interaction between parent and child. These home-based visits occur twice a week for one half hour to each assigned family during the school year. We have a special need for Spanish speaking volunteers.

Time commitment: A one-year commitment of 6 hours/week is required. Volunteers must commit to one year and attend initial training sessions and weekly peer supervision/staff meeting on Thursdays from 12:00-2:00pm.

For more information or to set up an interview, call Debra Brush, 617-969-5906 x113 or email dbrush@ncscweb.org.

PCHP Literacy Kit Creator

Use your creativity as a Literacy Kit Creator. Create fun art projects for the 24 children’s books used in the Parent-Child Home Program. Projects help reinforce the concepts explored in the books and are geared to children ages 1 ½ years-4 years.

Time commitment: flexible depending on how many projects volunteer would like to design. Orientation and ongoing consultation with the supervisor is provided.

Teach children strategies for being safe by training as a Prevention Specialist for the Child Assault Prevention Program. You will present workshops to students in grades K, 2 & 5 in the Newton schools to teach simple strategies to reduce vulnerability to assault and violence that focus on bullying, stranger safety, and assault by known persons. Fall 2010 training will take place October 22, 23, and 24.

Minimum Commitment: 6 hours per month for one school year.

Afterschool Homework Helper

Become a Homework Helper for the Afterschool Program (grades 2-5). No particular academic experience is necessary – just patience and an encouraging demeanor.

Time commitment: one or two afternoons per week for school year.

Mentor a Teen

Be a positive adult role model by mentoring a teenager through the Mentoring Connection program. Share social/recreation activities, sports, homework help, college and job searching and more.

Time commitments are flexible and average 1-2 hours per week. Training, supervision and skilled staff support is provided.

For more information about the program, visit Mentor Connection on NCSC's website, or contact Debby Tyson Gottlieb at 617-244-1404 x225 or email dtyson-gottlieb@ncscweb.org.
