This month Massachusetts and the nation are recognizing the good work mentors do.
Right now there is a huge need for mentors—especially men and people of color. That’s one of the messages NCSC and Mass Mentoring are trying to get out during National Mentoring Month.
According to Dr. Jean Rhodes of the University of Massachusetts Boston, mentors influence young people in three important ways: by enhancing social skills and emotional well-being, improving cognitive skills through dialogue and listening, and serving as a role model and advocate.
SOAR 55, a program of NCSC, is pleased to announce the January 20th opening of a satellite office at the Framingham Public Library located at 49 Lexington Street.
The office will be staffed by Lois Levick, a resident of Framingham, who will volunteer her time on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesdays to meet with individuals, age 55 and over, who are interested in volunteering in the metro west area.

A new teen center opened in Newton Highlands last month, offering adolescents an outlet to express their personalities, get involved with the community or simply hang out. The Chestnut Street Teen Center at 1254 Chestnut St. is the result of an effort from the Newton Community Service Center, community members, and students at Newton South High School. The center is celebrating its official, grand opening Dec.1.
We know that new residents to Newton and new parents are the most likely to be in need of NCSC's early education and care services. The Development & Marketing office seeks a volunteer to research and contact area professionals and groups which have contact with people making decisions to hire or change providers of child care, early education or family support services. Examples include pediatrician offices, hospital parent support groups, Warmlines, realtors/relocation specialists, midwives, elementary schools, Welcome Wagon, Newton and Waltham City Halls, etc.
