Newton Community Service Center (NCSC) is a nonprofit, multi-service organization that strengthens individual, family, and community life through a network of support services and educational programs. We promote social, emotional, and physical wellness and continuity of care for all ages. The agency serves a racially, ethnically and culturally diverse population regardless of economic circumstances from Newton, Waltham, and surrounding communities.

Agency Description

Founded in 1907, NCSC has become an integral part of the community and a safety net for thousands of families each year. As we prepare for our next 100 years, we find our social services are more critical than ever. More people, from diverse economic and social backgrounds, seek care or support for a loved one through early childhood education, teen and young adult mentoring, adult day health care and/or family support and guidance. While demand for support services is rising, state and federal funds are shrinking. With a commitment to a model of caring and comprehensive community service, NCSC’s dedicated board and staff, guided by a new President & CEO, William Garr, are implementing a strategic plan to result in expanded programs and services to fill community needs of today and tomorrow.

Overview

NCSC served more than 5,800 people (from babies to frail seniors) through its 10 core programs in FY 2005.

NCSC serves a broad spectrum of families and individuals who reside in Newton, Waltham, Watertown, Brookline, Needham, Norwood and Wellesley. The agency seeks to provide services to those most in need, whether financially disadvantaged or vulnerable in other ways. Recent percentages of low-income individuals enrolled in our programs are as follows:

50 % of children served in our Early Education and Child Care Center
80 % of those adults served in our Adult Day Health Care
56 % of those served through our Family Child Care system
88 % of those served through the Parents Program
98 % of the clients of The Parent Child Home Program

NCSC programs are provided in two West Newton facilities, as well as in Newton public schools, in client homes in the greater Metro West community and at Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA (summer day camp).

The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program serves all Newton public elementary schools, grades K, 2 and 5.

Our Teen REACH program, at the new Youth Center on Cherry Street – a dedicated space – offers programs and services to middle and high school age youth throughout the City, including mentoring, counseling and personal development, music, cooking, computer and athletic programs, summer adventure and school vacation week camps and a social action committee. Teen REACH aids many “at-risk” adolescents.

NCSC’s Early Education and Care Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals and NCSC’s summer camp at Hale Reservation is accredited by the American Camp Association.
