A former ice hockey player, Chanda Gunn is the new program director at the Chestnut Street Teen Center in Upper Falls. Gary Sinclair, vice president of Youth Services at Newton Community Service Center, said she was the obvious choice. “She has a lot of positive energy; she’s very enthusiastic and passionate about working with teens. She’s done a lot of group work and coaching with teens, and really had a clear sense of mission [about] what the potential of the teen center is and the potential of teens are,” said Sinclair.
The Chestnut Street Teen Center is funded by a four-year Safe Schools-Healthy Students grant and operates on a budget of about $180,000 a year, said Sinclair. It opened in December and is run through the Newton Community Service Center. The center houses pool and ping-pong tables, a fully equipped music room, computers, a weight room as well as a spacious kitchen and caters to teens in eighth- to 12th grade.
