Frequently Asked Questions:

Is the NCSC Summer Day Camp in Newton or Westwood?

Newton Community Service Center (NCSC) is a human service agency that offers a variety of programs for all ages at our West Newton facility. For our summer day camp, we transport children to the beautiful Hale Reservation in Westwood. This allows us to offer a rich variety of outdoor experiences, such as boating, fishing, swimming, nature studies, hiking, and much more. Hale Reservation is an ideal place for children to spend the summer.

How long is the ride from your West Newton location (492 Waltham Street) to Hale Reservation in Westwood?

The bus ride takes approximately 20 minutes and is well-staffed by NCSC unit leaders and senior counselors.

What is your camper to counselor ratio?

Our camp is accredited by the American Camp Association, in addition to complying with mandatory state requirements. Therefore, we maintain a camper to counselor ratio of 6:1 for age 5, 8:1 for ages 6 to 8, and 10:1 for ages 9 - 14. For most of the camp day we exceed these ratios.

What is a typical camp day like?

Campers arrive at NCSC in West Newton between 8:00 and 8:30.

At 8:30 we board the bus to Hale, and our day begins as soon as we hit the reservation. Our activity blocks are 45-minutes long. Your camper will have some activities at the same time every day throughout the session, such as daily Red Cross swim lessons and a separate session for free swim. Other activities will change day-to-day. See a sample schedule .

We board the bus to return to NCSC in Newton at approximately 3:00 and arrive at NCSC around 3:30, and participate in outdoor games and free play. Pickup is at 4:30. For our extended day campers, we will serve a late afternoon snack and campers will play outside under staff supervision until pickup at 6:00.

Is NCSC just for Newton families?

NCSC campers are from a number of communities, including Newton, Waltham, Watertown, Boston, Needham, Wellesley, Framingham, Brookline, Lexington, and more.

Can my kindergartner come to camp?

Our youngest campers will be Fall 2009 kindergartners. The camp day is a full one, with a lot of walking through wooded terrain. Each camper is responsible for carrying his or her backpack throughout the reservation. Counselors in our youngest units give their campers extra time to transition between activities and offer a lot of support as campers build stamina over the course of a session. However, camp is not appropriate for all incoming kindergartners. Consider your child’s energy level and tolerance for warm weather when you decide whether or not to send your kindergartner to camp.

Is a deposit necessary to register?

We require a $50, non-refundable deposit for each session. We accept payments by check or credit card. To pay by credit card please fill out our registration form, or contact Paula Fiske at 617-969-5906 ext. 138.

Is financial aid available?

Financial aid may be available for families in need. Please download our scholarship application and submit it with your registration. The NCSC scholarship committee will award aid on a first-come, first-served basis so submit your application and registration today!
