LEADERSHIP IN TRAINING PROGRAM FOR SUMMER CAMP

This program is for young students who are highly motivated, ready to work and play hard, and who demonstrate additional responsibilities in accepting the challenges of leadership.  The goal of the program is to develop leadership skills that you can use throughout life, help others and yourself identify and achieve goals, and learn how to work with children at camp and in many other settings.  Being a LIT is a unique experience as young students learn and grow as leaders while having fun.

Who can apply to be a Leader:
Students who have completed 8th or 9th grade who are interested in learning leadership and camp counselor skills.  Students who have completed 10th grade who do not have the experience to be a junior counselor may also be considered for the program.
What the program day is like:
LIT’s day will include leadership skill sessions and discussion groups.  They will learn about group leadership, program planning, communication, working with children, and learn skills necessary to be a positive leader and camp counselor.
Example of skills for leading children includes:

• Communicating with children
• Listening and teaching positive behavior and values
• Handling undesired behavior and conflicts in a positive way
• Planning and leading games and activities, teaching skills in various
   aspects of camp
• Work with a team
• Learning to be a positive role model for others
• Creativity and problem solving

LIT’s will also spend time assisting activity specialists or camp counselors.  By shadowing and observing camp staff LIT’s will get to know younger campers, what their needs are, and learn techniques and practice their skills learned in the skill sessions and discussion groups to lead a group of campers.
LIT’s will take part in their own camp recreational activities.  Scheduling will include a time for a ropes leadership class, boating, swimming, and other camp activities.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A certificate of completion will be awarded to those who fulfill the requirements of the program as well as the opportunity to request recommendations for future jobs and or school.  Each level requires at least 2 weeks of participation.  After each level you will receive an evaluation and a certificate of completion.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
1)      LIT Essay
2)      Letter of recommendations – must be completed by a non-relative stating your appropriateness for working with children, your maturity, and level of responsibility.  Possible individuals who may be suitable for writing such a letter are mentioned above in the reference section.
3)      Registration and application returned with payment.

After the application and registration form has been processed and we receive your child’s references a decision will be made and you will be notified. An interview is conducted as needed.  If your child is accepted we will mail you a confirmation packet.  There are a limited number of spaces in each session in order to provide a strong program.  We use an application process to ensure the LIT program is a good fit for both the student and the camp.  Not all who apply are accepted into the program.  To register, a deposit of $50 for each session, must accompany the application and registration form.  If your child is not accepted into the program your deposit will be returned. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of maturity and responsible behavior conducive to working as part of a group.  Applicants will be accepted based on their level of focus and interest in working with children.
